What is Midjourney’s Prefer Option Set Command?
/Prefer Option Set is a command you can use in Midjourney’s Discord to store basically any string of numbers and letters you’d like. This is especially helpful to store commonly reused prompts, parameters, and image reference URLs.
How to a Save Custom Prompts & Parameters for Quick Use in Discord?
Simply type in /prefer and select /prefer Option Set (we’ll get to /prefer Suffix, /prefer Option list, and the others later).
Then click on the +1 and the click on values.
Give your preference a short name you’ll remember.
Then enter the prompts or parameters you’d like to reuse.
How I Use /Prefer Option in my Design Job
Cool trick, right? But how about some real world examples!
When I’m not obsessing over AI, I run a digital agency with my husband called Fulton St. Digital.
Here are some ways I use preferences in my everyday job designing websites and ad campaigns.
Save Style Reference Image URLs
When I’m trying to make a bunch of images for a campaign using the same branding, I’ll likely be using an image prompt, a –sref, a –sw, a –iw, or some combination of those parameters to do so.
Since image URLs can be impossible to memorize and can get lost in your feed, I find it easier to just store them in a preference named after the style/brand I’m trying to replicate.
Save Brand Colors
Bet you didn’t know about this awesome trick!
While Midjourney does not know what hex code colours are, there’s a way to generate images that use your exact brand colours.
Simply upload an image of your brand’s color(s), and then add it to your prompts as an –sref with the –sw turned way down.
Since you’ll use your brand colors all the time, save the –sref and weight in a preference so you can easily call for it in all future prompts.
Save Commonly Used Parameters
This is what preferences were built for, so of course I use this every day!
Since my job predominantly requires horizontal assets for websites and marketing campaigns, I am forever generating assets with a 16:9 aspect ratio. I also usually add a low –chaos value to my prompts since I like to see a lot of variation in my results.
So instead of forever typing –ar 16:9 –chaos 15, I’ve now save that combo in a preference called –normal. It saves a ton of unnecessary time.
Save Character Reference URLs
Similar to when I’m trying to generate. Images of a consistent style, I also use preferences when I’m trying to create a character consistently across multiple assets. I’ll likely be using an image prompt, a –cref, and a –cw to do so.
I store the image URLs and the appropriate parameters in a preference named after the character I’m trying to replicate.

How to Apend Parameters to the End of Your Parameters Automatically?
(What is Midjourney’s /Prefer Suffix?)
The /prefer Suffix command is similar to /prefer Option, but Suffix automatically adds the text you saved to the end of every prompt.
Simply type /prefer and select it’s Suffix option.
Click on “New Value” from the list of Options.
Real World Application: How I Use /Prefer Suffix in my Graphic Design Work
Suffixes are especially helpful when creating a series of similar images, such as cut assets, marketing campaigns, a collage, or a school project. This way, you aren’t forever repeating an –ar to make sure all your photos have the same dimensions or an –sref to make sure all your images have a cohesive style.
You can always turn the suffix off later, so I like to add one when I’m creating a lot of similar images in my day job.

Can you Override a Suffix One Time with the Same Parameter in your Prompt?
Yes! Just type the parameter you’d like to override in with your prompt and that part of your parameter will be turned off.
So, if your suffix is set to –ar 16:9, but you want one vertical photo, you can add –ar 9:16 to the end of your prompt, and it will override your set suffix.
How To Clear a /Prefer Suffix?
Finished generating images for that campaign and ready to move to a different project? First you’ll want to turn off your /prefer Suffix.
Simply run the /prefer Suffix command again but without adding a value.
You can also remove your suffix by resetting all your settings in the /settings command, but as the name suggests, that would reset any other custom settings you may have.
How to Check Current Suffix?
Just run a simple prompt and see what’s added to the end.
Can you Check Your Current Suffix Without Wasting Hours?
Unfortunately, no, not that I’ve been able to discover.
Do you know of a way? Reach out, I’d love to hear from you!

Is There a Limit to the Amount of /Preferences You Can Set?
Yes, 20. After you hit that limit, you’ll need to start deleting old preferences.
Can you override one parameter of your preference?
Yep! Just make sure whichever parameter value you’d like to generate goes first.
For an example, I have a preference named –normal whose value is “–ar 16:9 –chaos 15” as I often need horizontal photos for my web design and I like to see a little variance in my results.
However, let’s say for my next photo I want the image to be vertical. If I add –ar 9:16 before –normal, it will overwrite the –ar value in my preference.
But if I add the –ar 9:16 after –normal the aspect ratio in my preference will be used and the image will stay horizontal
Can you use a /prefer Option in the middle of a prompt
Absolutely, as long as the prompt still makes sense.
You, of course, can’t have parameters in the middle of your prompt or a prompt after your parameters, but as long as you add your preferences in places where their values make sense, you can add them anywhere you’d like.
Can you use a parameter twice if it’s in your preference.
Yep, but only the first value will be used.
I go into this in more detail above.

You can use your existing preferences on Midjourney’s website, but as of the writing of this article you cannot create new preferences on the site.
How to save prompts on the Midjourney website?
Unfortunately, as of right now, you cannot save prompts only using the Midjourney web tool.
What are the other /prefers? What are /prefer Variability, Auto_DM, and Remix?
These preferences are essentially toggles. They are a quick shortcut that allows you to turn each of those settings on or off without having to open the settings window.
Variability gets toggles between high and medium.
Remix gets turned on and off.
Auto_dm controls whether or not you get a notification in your dms when a job has finished.
