Midjourney Personalization came out of nowhere! There I was minding my own business Thursday afternoon when I received a DM in Discord announcing Midjourney’s latest new feature: Personalization.
What is Midjourney Personalization?
Midjourney Personalization, or the —p parameter, allows you to train your own style based on ranking images. In the future, you will be able to train your model by liking images from the explore tab on the website as well!
Essentially, you can train a model that learns what you like and will generate photos based on that understanding.
Requirements to Use Midjourney Personalization
You’ll need to have a minimum of 200 images ranked in order to use this feature.
This makes sense, as Midjourney will need a decent amount of context into what you like and dislike.
How to Check How Many Images You Have Ranked?
Simply enter the /info command and it will be listed with the rest of your Midjourney profile information.

How to use Midjourney Personalization in Discord?
There are two different ways you can use your own Personalized Misjourney model: through the parameter or through your settings.
How to use the —p Parameter?
You can use —p to toggle your model “on” for a single prompt. The parameter doesn’t require any arguments, you can just write —p.
Midjourney will automatically generate a code beside —p once you submit a prompt. This is your own personal style code that you can share with others but more on the later.
How to Turn On Personalization Through your Discord Settings?
Alternatively, you can open your settings by typing the command /settings and pressing the “Personalization” button.
This will turn your personal model on for all your future prompts.
How to Use Midjourney Personalization on the Website?
Click on the filter icon beside the imagine text bar. Then click the “Personalization” toggle on.
How to Rank Images?
Simply log into Midjourney’s website, click on the task menu item, and then click “Rate Images.”
Here you will be greeted with two large images, as well as a skip and undo button. Ultimately, you will be asked to click which image you like better.
Now be careful here, you don’t want to fall into the same trap I did.
Make sure you only select a photo if you like the style and would like to add it to your model’s training data.
Otherwise, you’ll flood your model with images you don’t like.

What if I Already Ranked A Bunch of Images Not in my Style?
You too, hey?
My heart sank after learning about this feature; I had been ranking images for MONTHS now without being specific to my own tastes. I was ranking ALL the image pairs, even the ones I didn’t personally love because I thought the point was to make the model better. I didn’t know that this would be used to train my personalized model months down the line. 😢 (que smallest violin)
The great news for us is that, as long as you keep ranking images, your personal Midjourney model will evolve with you. Starting now, ensure you are being selective in the images you rank. The math says eventually, the new style will win out.
How to Test What My Personal Style is Right Now?
If you want to test what your style looks like without a prompt to influence it, simply type “” —p in the prompt area. This will generate a photo in your style that is completely unbiased by anything.
Can you Have More than One Personalization Model?
Unfortunately, no, not yet. Midjourney’s CEO, David, mentioned that it’s definitely something they’d love to do in the future, but it’s now available right now.
That being said, your personalization model is a living and breathing feature; you can always train it on different styles down the line.
How do you Keep your Style the Same?
It’s hard to know just yet since the feature just came out, but theoretically, you can just stop ranking images once you’re happy, and the style should remain the same.
Can You Reset Your Personalization?
No, but if you rank more the style will inevitably change.
Can You Use “Likes” to Train the Model?
Not as of yet, but the ability to do so was teased in all of Midjourney’s feature announcements so I would have to assume that ability is coming rather quickly.
What Other Parameters are Compatible?
Since —p has a similar technical foundation as —style raw, and —stylize, all three of these parameters work well together.

You can use —stylize to adjust the intensity of your personalized style. The default —stylize value is 100, so you can adjust your style’s intensity as low as 0 or as high as 1000.

Using —style raw on the other hand, blends your personal style with —style raw’s usual look.

What is the Code Generated After the —p Parameter?
This is a shortened version of your user ID, and it’s your own personalized style code!
This is especially cool because you can share your style with others and then they can generate images based on your model!
Does Your Personalization Code Change Over Time?
No, unfortunately not. Since your code is based on your user ID, you only get the one.
There is currently no way to capture what your style is at a given moment and reference it at a future date.
I wish there was!
This was highly requested in Discord, so it will likely change in the future.
How to Use Other People’s Personalization Codes?
Simply add your friend’s personal code to your —p parameter in between these brackets <>.
If you are in a community page, you can @ people’s usernames. This will not work in DMs.
Does Midjoureny Personalization work with Niji?
No, not yet. But judging by how fast they’ve added Niji to past features, I can see this changing quickly.
Do you Still Get Free Hours for Ranking Images?
Yes! However, the competition is now a bit more steep. One Midjourney user who was rewarded a free hour today, the day after the feature was launched, said they ranked 1.5k images to do so.
Why is Midjourney’s Personalization Not Working?
Simply put, it’s new. 🤷🏻♀️ Midjourney was very clear in announcing that this is not a “stable feature” right now. They plan to do tons of updates this week fine-tuning the feature as we test it.
